Step 1: Stay Calm and Gather Information at the Scene

Immediately following an accident, prioritize your safety. Call the police and remain at the scene in a safe location. When and if possible, gather relevant information that may be needed later, such as:

  • Location, date, and time of the accident
  • Names, addresses, phone numbers, and insurance policy numbers of everyone involved
  • Weather conditions at the time of the accident
  • Photos of the damaged vehicles
  • The information of the agents who assisted you
  • Copies of the police and/or accident reports, if available

Step 2: Contact Your Insurance Company

Notify your insurance company about the accident ASAP. Whether you file the claim over the phone, online, through a mobile app, or with an agent, be prepared to provide the type of information listed above.

Step 3: Review Your Policy Coverages and Deductibles

Understanding your insurance policy's coverages and deductible is crucial when filing your claim. If you don’t know what your policy covers, you can contact your insurance company and find out.

Step 4: Work with Your Insurance Agent

Your insurance company assigns an agent/adjuster to handle your claim. The agent will contact you within a few days after receiving the claim. They’ll assess damages, address any personal injury claims, and they may review police reports depending on the gravity of the accident.

Step 5: Repair or Replace Your Vehicle with Gunn Collision

Once your claim is approved, your insurer may require an estimate for the cost of repairs, which we can usually share with them. The insurer then evaluates the information provided by us and your adjuster. Upon approval, the insurer issues payment either to you or to us–often after the deductible. If your vehicle is totaled, normally the insurer provides a check for the vehicle's value minus the deductible.
